THE BRAVE ONE (18) (WARNER DVD)
ABOVE: Jodie Foster in The Brave One
The Big Apple turns savagely sour for New York radio show host Jodie Foster and her fiancé Naveen Andrews.
A gang of hoodlums attacks them in Central Park. Andrews is killed and Foster ends up in hospital.
She recovers physically but becomes paranoid and buys an illegal gun.
When she is innocently involved in a hold-up, she shoots to kill. Finding that killing is easy, she turns vigilante to clean up the city.
Foster’s enthralling, award-worthy portrait of a woman who reacts lethally when pushed beyond her limits is her best in years, while Terence Howard supports strongly as a pursuing cop whose motives turn out to be ambiguous.
It’s a powerful take on Death Wish.
VERDICT: 9/10
