I CAN RULE AGAIN AT PALACE

ABOVE: Goldberg has a soft spot for Palace
7th November 2009

By Paul Brown

LOOK away now, Crystal Palace fans, but Mark Goldberg could one day return to Selhurst Park.

The infamous former Eagles chairman lost £40m – and his marriage – after his disastrous takeover of the club in the 1990s went horribly wrong.

But after resurrecting himself as manager of Blue Square South side Bromley, Goldberg is back on the up.

And last night he outlined his ambitious plans ahead of today’s visit of Colchester.

Goldberg said: “I’d like to progress as a manager.

“It’s not a full-time occupation for me but it’s a career I’m enjoying.

“I’m getting my coaching badges at the moment. I need to earn my stripes at this level.

“I’ve still got a real soft spot for Palace and I’d like to think most Palace fans know that.

“It wouldn’t be difficult to go back there one day as a manager.

“I’ve never had a problem with Palace supporters, except at the time.

“It wasn’t just a Mark Goldberg problem, it was a wider football problem.

“I realised early on that I didn’t have the money to make a difference at Palace.

“You’ve got to have hundreds of millions or you will lose your money.

“But I went bankrupt to save the club and I’m still a Palace fan.

“I think they know my heart was always in the right place.”

Some Eagles fans might dispute that.

The club was plunged into administration after the lavish spending of the Goldberg regime.

But the one-time millionaire has had better luck as manager of Bromley, the Kent club he led into the FA Cup first round three years ago.

And Goldberg aims to go full time in the job once he has made enough money from his business interests setting up property deals.

He said: “I wouldn’t want the story to end with Crystal Palace.

“Hopefully that was just the first chapter.”
