UNDER-fire Sheffield boss Dave Matsos has been told his job is safe and he will definitely be in charge next season.

It’s a remarkable act of faith by the Steelers management who are backing Matsos despite their stumbling start to the new Elite League season.

The defending champs are only two points off the bottom of the table after losing nine of their first dozen matches.

Fans have been calling for a change at the top but Steelers owner Bob Phillips has come out in total support of the man who has led them to four pieces of silverware since taking over only three years ago.

Steelers’ spokesman Dave Simms said: “It’s easier to fire the coach than 16 players but we will fire 16 players before we fire Mattie.”

Matsos is already planning big changes to his squad and will get full backing to bring in new faces.

He said: “I’m the most patient coach in the league, the most patient coach these guys will ever play for but that patience has ended.

“Coaches don’t fire players, players fire players by not doing what the coach wants and asks for.

“These players are shooting themselves. They’re not giving me an option but to make more changes.”

NEWCASTLE have failed to tempt hot-shot Ryan Finnerty, 28, back to the Elite League.

He turned down the Vipers’ offer and will stay at International Hockey League Bloomington PrairieThunder.

ROMFORD have sacked defenceman Adam Copeland, 33, after a dismal start to their English Premier League campaign.
