WHILE Bodies was a perfectly good/morbid pop song, sonically it wasn’t groundbreaking -and it was certainly no crowd-pleasing Angels.
WITH some saying Whitney’s voice is past its best and Mariah going all Crunk on our asses, we need Leona Lewis.
WHILE the voice is as warm and cosy as treacle pudding, the chorus is reminiscent of early noughties Ronan Keating.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK - JOSS STONE: COLOUR ME FREE

ABOVE: The tunes are a mix of defiant, uplifting and heart-wrenching
2nd November 2009

By Sarah-Louise James

CHAMELEON-haired Joss caused controversy when she said this of her new album: “I would say run a bath, roll a spliff, and have a listen.

"I do that with every one of my favorite albums."

There was also a mild furore over the record’s cover.

Joss’s original pack shot showed her curled up and contorted, behind bars - her not-so-subtle attempt at saying record label EMI are trapping her.

The cover has since been changed to a non-descript plain purple one. But that can’t disguise the biting lyrics.

On Free Me, Joss sings: “Don't tell me that I won't/ I will/ Don't tell me how you think/how feel/ Don't tell me 'cuz I know what's real/ That, I can do."

And she goes on: “Singing in our on voice/ We can make that choice/to be, to be free.”

Fortunately, despite “issues” swirling around the album, like rubbish in a wind storm, it’s bloody good.

The voice is rich and sexy; the tunes are a mix of defiant, uplifting and heart-wrenching and R&B rumbler Big Ole Game is an album highlight.
