KOP HOPES HIT ROCKS

ABOVE: Benitez was hit by Lyon's late goal
5th November 2009

By Dave Lyons

LIVERPOOL’S Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread.

Rafa Benitez’s side were denied a stunning win when Lyon equalised through Lisandro Lopez in the very last minute.

Second-half sub Ryan Babel had sparked hopes of another memorable European success when he fi red home a 25-yarder in the 83rd minute.

It looked enough to earn all three points but the Liverpool defence failed to deal with a high ball and Lopez beat Pepe Reina.

The draw means the French outfi t are through to the knockout stages, and Liverpool are now relying on Fiorentina – who last night beat Debrecen 5-2 – not doing the business in their last two games.

Benitez said: “We showed character and we still have a chance of going through.”

Arsenal cruised through to the brink of qualification with a 4-1 stroll against AZ Alkmaar.

Two goals from skipper Cesc Fabregas, and one each for Samir Nasri and Abou Diaby ensured Arsene Wenger’s side were never in any danger.
